UNDERSTANDING BOARDING REQUIREMENTS

Intact Dogs & Boarding: Spay/Neuter Rules and Timing

Looking for boarding for an unneutered male or an unspayed female? Traction K9 Kennels in Del Valle near Austin has no spay/neuter requirement. We welcome intact, also called unaltered, dogs in private indoor/outdoor accommodations without group play.

A boarding facility’s surgery deadline can put pressure on a decision that deserves to be considered around your dog’s health and development. Our individual-care setup lets you choose boarding without scheduling surgery to meet a group-play admission rule.

Here is what the terms mean, how boarding policies differ, and what the veterinary references say about surgery timing.

First, What Do These Words Mean?

Intact / Unaltered

Intact and unaltered usually mean a dog has not had a conventional spay or neuter. An unneutered male has not had his testicles removed; an unspayed female has not had her ovaries removed. These describe reproductive status, not whether the dog is friendly toward people or other dogs.

Spayed / Neutered / Altered

Spaying commonly means surgically removing a female dog’s ovaries, with or without the uterus. Neutering commonly refers to removing a male dog’s testicles, although the term is also used more broadly for both sexes. “Altered” is shorthand for a dog who has undergone one of these procedures.

Why Do Boarding Facilities Set Spay/Neuter Deadlines?

Many boarding businesses include shared play yards and set spay/neuter rules as part of admission to that environment. Those policies help manage reproduction and the practical demands of group care. An admission age is different from a veterinary recommendation for an individual dog.

Traction uses a different setup: each dog has their own indoor suite and outdoor patio, without group play. Your dog does not need to enjoy unfamiliar dogs or be spayed or neutered to board with us.

Choosing Timing Around Your Dog

We do not require you to bring surgery forward to qualify for boarding. Timing can be discussed with your veterinarian around breed, sex, growth, health and your ability to prevent unwanted mating.

Research supports looking at those individual factors rather than treating a boarding deadline as the right medical age for every dog. Waiting until maturity is relevant for some dogs; the references below do not recommend one age for all breeds and both sexes.

Read the Veterinary Research

Hart and colleagues, 2024 examined veterinary records for five additional breed groups and updated guidance covering 40 breeds. Associations between surgery timing, joint disorders and selected cancers differed by breed and sex; some groups had no significant increase. It is a retrospective records study, not a trial establishing one schedule for every dog.

The UC Davis summary explains the research and its breed-specific approach. The paper also considers urinary incontinence. Its findings concern the conditions and dogs studied, rather than every possible health benefit or risk of surgery.

Growth Matters

Six months is not the end of growth for every dog. AAHA’s 2019 guidance distinguishes small dogs from those expected to weigh at least 45 pounds as adults.

It proposes around six months for small-breed males, and after growth stops, approximately 9–15 months, for large-breed males. Female timing involves additional tradeoffs, including unwanted pregnancy, mammary tumors, orthopedic disease and urinary incontinence. Your veterinarian can apply these considerations to your dog.

Traction's Spay/Neuter Requirement: There Isn't One

No spay or neuter surgery is required to board at Traction K9 Kennels. Unneutered males and unspayed females are welcome. Each dog has a private indoor suite and outdoor patio with solid dividers separating unfamiliar dogs, including options for contact-free care.

We do not facilitate or recommend group play during boarding. If your female dog is in heat, contact us about care arrangements and availability before booking. Our vaccination and reservation requirements still apply.

Intact Status and Human Friendliness Are Separate

When creating your dog’s booking profile, choose Do not enter – aggressive, Interaction is OK but exercise caution, or Friendly. Choose Friendly only if there are zero concerns about aggression toward humans. An intact dog can be friendly; a neutered dog can need contact-free care.

Select the appropriate option in the profile instead of sending a separate behavior explanation.

Private boarding without a spay/neuter requirement. Our individual accommodations let intact and altered dogs stay without sharing a play yard with unfamiliar dogs.
