Start with the basics

What should I bring?

REACTIVE OR ANXIOUS

Will this environment suit my dog?

Look at separation, handling, and routine instead of assuming every dog needs a busy social schedule.

Questions to ask a boarding facility

“Dog boarding” can mean a private suite, overnight care combined with group daycare, or a stay in someone’s home. The useful question is what your dog will actually experience.

Where will my dog spend the day?

Ask to see the sleeping space, outdoor area, barriers, and cleaning routine. Find out whether a dog is crated, moved between areas, or required to share space with unfamiliar dogs.

Who needs to handle my dog?

Ask how many people may handle them across shifts, what training those people have, and what happens if your dog becomes uncomfortable with one staff member.

What is the complete stay cost?

Compare the same dates, holiday rates, arrival and pickup windows, medication fees, and optional activities. A lower nightly rate can produce a different total once extras are included.

Find the best fit for the dog you actually have

A dog can love their family without wanting unfamiliar people or dogs in their space. Start with the practical care requirements.

HUMAN AGGRESSION

Can daily care happen without handling?

Contact-free care relies on a facility’s layout and access controls. See how dogs can remain in one private area while the other is cleaned.

INTACT DOGS

Why do kennels require spay/neuter?

Learn what intact and altered mean, how group-care admission rules work, and what breed-specific veterinary research says about surgery timing.

FRIENDLY DOGS

Does a friendly dog need group play?

Being sociable does not make shared play mandatory. At Traction we do not facilitate or recommend group play during boarding, including for friendly dogs.

Questions worth asking on a kennel tour

  • If my dog growls at a new employee, what happens next? Ask for the actual care procedure, not just reassurance.
  • Will my dog be crated? Where, and for how long? Look at the space they will use between activities and overnight.
  • If you use playgroups, how many dogs are together? Ask how staff interrupt mounting, persistent nipping, crowding, and unwanted attention.
  • Can my dog opt out of handling or group play? Find out whether that changes their housing, care, or eligibility.
  • Who is physically present overnight? Ask who responds to an emergency and how owners are contacted.
  • What will you tell me each day? Look for useful observations about meals, behavior, stool, and other changes, alongside photos.

At Traction, daily report cards always include a photo, behavior report, feeding report, stool report, and anything else of note. Meet the people behind our care model.

Plan the boarding stay around your trip

Before you leave

Choose boarding dates that fit your flight and the kennel’s handover hours. Upload vaccination records, complete care instructions, and confirm the deposit before arrival.

While you are away

Keep owner and emergency-contact details current. Read the daily updates so changes in feeding, stool, and behavior are easy to follow.

When you return

Allow for baggage collection and the drive from the airport. Arrange late pickup ahead of time if your itinerary falls outside the normal window.
